Signs that God Speaks to Us

Firstly, how to know when God is speaking to you, God does not make His presence known with pomp and pageantry. Instead God speaks to us in a calm and soothing voice which can easily get blocked out in this highly chaotic world. He speaks softly to our hearts, minds and souls. Those who are very much attuned to God would not miss His messages. In 1 Kings 19:12-13 the Bible says “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire”. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face an went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?'”

This is a story in the Old Testament of God presenting Himself in the smallest of ways, a gentle whisper, to the Prophet Elijah. This is a beautiful lesson in God’s preference for speaking in a beautiful, still, small and gentle voice to His children, so it is advised that you listen to your hearts and minds for that still small voice, that beautiful gentle whisper of the Most High God.

Secondly, God always asks us to do the right thing. This is a tested and trusted fact, believe me that whatsoever He is telling you to do is definitely the best thing for you, no matter how ridiculous it might seem. And no matter how the odds might be stacked up against you, He definitely has you protected on all sides. God always ensures that we do the right thing and doesn’t advice us contrary to that. And the truth is we usually know it is the right thing to do but due to how the odds are stacked against us, we avoid it like a plague.  Remember that no matter how bleak things might seem, He lets us know that He is with us at all times.  He also doesn’t let us deviate from the path.

Thirdly, just like God’s voice is a still small one, highly unexpected for such a huge God. If we listen closely, His message comes from various sources. Some comes as predictable as from your pastor or priest,  others as unpredictable as little children, the delivery guy, the lady at the departmental store. It is simply amazing that the possibilities when it comes to God are endless. Also God sometimes speaks to us through events that happen around us, no matter how  insignificant they might be. Simply remember that God could use anyone and any situation.

Fourthly, God always speaks to us through the Bible, this is another tested and trusted fact. The Holy Bible is one of God’s special mediums of communicating with us, but sadly, we easily forget that. When a person reads the Bible, he/she begins to realize that several scriptures tend to speak directly to whatsoever could be ongoing in such a person’s life. They tend to provide answers to questions that he/she could be asking. And once a person realizes this, they realize that God has spoken to them through the Bible. The Bible contains God’s word about every aspect of our lives. And we should view it as a form of guidebook provided by God to us so that we might know the plans He has for us. And always know what He wants to tell us at every point in our lives.

Fifthly, prayer. There is a song that goes “Prayer is the key, Prayer is the master key, Jesus started with prayer an ended with prayer, Prayer is the master key”. God speaks to His children when they pray. It’s really that simple, but sadly, people don’t find  time to pray. So they don’t hear God’s voice as often. And they feel as though He is no longer speaking to them when in fact He speaks but they don’t hear. Prayer keeps us constantly attuned to God which ensures that we always receive His messages for us.

Lastly, and most importantly for how to know when God is speaking to you, when God speaks to us, it brings with it abundant peace. This peace permeates literally every aspect of our being – mind, heart, body, soul. And it cannot be ignored regardless of how chaotic the world is or what the Devil does. This peace that we feel inside begins to  manifest in all that we do.  It radiates from us and through us. Those around us notice this and we affect them positively. It gives birth to inexplicable joy, an increased faith in God and an unending love for Him.

Whenever we receive God’s message for us and realize His plan for our lives, the sense of peace comes. We are aware that He is in control of everything. He has spoken to us and He always stands on His word. God has provided His much desired input and instinctively we know that everything would be alright. This is what you need for how to know when God is speaking to you in different ways, through his word Bible verses, through people.
